Episode Transcript
[00:00:05] Speaker A: Hello, hello, hello, everyone welcome back to Malorie's Weird World Adventures the Podcast. I'm your host Mallory and I'm your host Michael and we're here to show you just how weird this world of ours really is.
[00:00:16] Speaker B: You're already giggling.
[00:00:17] Speaker A: I am because you look so perplexed when I started talking. You weren't ready you were going for a drink.
[00:00:22] Speaker B: My doctor Pepper's bubbling couldn't tell if it was gonna.
[00:00:25] Speaker A: I can hear the bubble sometimes. I can hear well, I have. We have two bubbly drinks over there, so yep, there'll be a little.
I can hear things better in my headphones though than I can. I feel like when it actually comes out because I heard you and Adam playing games one time in the background when I was recording it and then it wasn't really there in the episode. So fascinating start, so fascinating. So if you guys don't know already, we are celebrating the release of Weird world Adventures Season Two on Amazon Prime. This fall and we're highlighting a new episode every week until launch and this week we're here talking about Germany.
Yay, yay.
[00:01:08] Speaker B: Where can we find your stuff?
[00:01:10] Speaker A: You can find my stuff on maloriesadventures dot com and you can follow us on Instagram alleriesadventures and you can find us on TikTok allerymackey. And Michael doesn't have social media.
[00:01:24] Speaker B: I do.
[00:01:24] Speaker A: He does just personal and privacy has.
[00:01:29] Speaker B: Very little interest and value to me.
[00:01:31] Speaker A: Wow, yep, yep, yep. So this episode is like really special to Michael, because it was his idea to go to Germany and and Follow the Fairy Tale. Route from the Brothers Grimm.
[00:01:48] Speaker B: It was my idea it was and then I didn't get to go.
[00:01:52] Speaker A: He went without me, he stayed at home, we had to work.
So I got to go out on this adventure by myself and meet your.
[00:02:04] Speaker B: New knight in Shining armor literally literally.
[00:02:08] Speaker A: Oh my gosh, you guys, I stayed the night in Trindleburg Castle. Which is the quote unquote real Rapunzel Tower. They say that it inspired the Brothers Grimm when they were writing their version of Rapunzel, because Rapunzel is actually an Italian tale and people may not know, they didn't actually write most of those stories.
[00:02:29] Speaker B: I didn't know that too.
[00:02:30] Speaker A: You told me, yeah, they just collected stories from people they met and compiled them together and a lot of them have origins in very different countries. So Rapunzel was Italian and their version was inspired by Trendleburg Castle. That's what they say, okay, yeah. And my favorite thing that I learned at Trindleburg Castle is that apparently a bunch of tourists show up and a lot of them are Americans and they say, oh, where's rapunzel buried. The real rapunzel, the real rapunzel. And they're like, oh, it's just a story, it's not real.
[00:03:10] Speaker B: Yeah, I was hoping you were gonna climb some hair into the tower, though.
[00:03:14] Speaker A: They did have like a rope that was braided like hair coming down out from the top of the tower.
[00:03:20] Speaker B: Didn't climb it though.
[00:03:22] Speaker A: No, it looked dangerous and I don't think it was actually climbable, but I did climb to the top of the tower.
There was a lot of stairs and it started out completely fine because you're just going up these like castle stairs and then the last couple flights were just this tiny little circular metal staircase that you could see through so does.
[00:03:44] Speaker B: It actually narrow at the top or.
[00:03:45] Speaker A: Just the stairs the stairs narrow at the top. I don't think the tower does I don't know.
I think it had to do with it originally being like the guards tower.
So there was something about the way it was built where it wasn't like that all the way to the top for whatever security purposes or what I don't know, but it's very it got to me, it got to Me the.
[00:04:08] Speaker B: Cutting Edge Security Technology in this. Tower it gets thinner at the top cutting edge.
[00:04:14] Speaker A: It probably have a ladder to take you from like one point up to the top, so that people couldn't get.
[00:04:20] Speaker B: Track the ladder and then like the top would be safe.
[00:04:22] Speaker A: That's what I would think.
[00:04:23] Speaker B: Okay, good point see cutting edge technology, exactly.
[00:04:27] Speaker A: It's perfect.
[00:04:28] Speaker B: Practical ladder didn't see that coming fascinating. Don't even need ADT, right?
[00:04:34] Speaker A: It's like in your game that you are playing where you just push people that are trying to get up on your tower over the ladder.
Perfect.
Does the trick Knock over the ladder.
[00:04:46] Speaker B: What will you do with these ladders? And just push it off the wall here? Just give it a little shove.
[00:04:51] Speaker A: Yeah, we don't want those people coming up and they're climbing it so we'll just push them down.
[00:04:55] Speaker B: I think a lot of the siege ladders though would have like anchory type pieces on the top, You know? I mean, it wasn't obviously everyone's aware that you shove a ladder right, right, right, right. So it wasn't. I don't think as simple as just push it.
[00:05:10] Speaker A: And they were sturdy.
[00:05:11] Speaker B: They're sturdy, but I think like they would have like a piece that could collapse over a wall, right? Like hook, like anchor in. So it'll be a little bit more challenging. Just give this a cause.
[00:05:23] Speaker A: It's like pulled down by their body weight. Yeah. But I was greeted by a knight in shining armor. I know it was great. I got to the castle and I think I was a little bit late because I had an electric car and it was a whole thing We've talked about this before. And I'm trying to get in. And there's this bridge over the moat to get you to the castle. And there's just a night there He's like Lady Mallory, the Queen has arrived.
I was like. Oh my gosh.
[00:05:50] Speaker B: Wow, that is not the reception. She gets back here at home.
[00:05:54] Speaker A: Wow, I'm the queen princess. I'm a princess, I'm a princess.
[00:06:02] Speaker B: You like being the princess. Cause you feel all young.
[00:06:06] Speaker A: Wow, she's middle aged. Michael Queen. You take that back. Oh my god, you take that back. You take that back.
[00:06:15] Speaker C: Oh my goodness.
[00:06:17] Speaker B: Oh my God Queen has been insulted.
[00:06:19] Speaker A: I have been.
Well, I got to go and you didn't.
We went down the fairytale route all the way, starting in Frankfurt and up to Alisford and Marburg and Trendelberg and you'd already seen.
[00:06:37] Speaker B: Oh, is it the Mermaid ice?
[00:06:39] Speaker A: Yes, we're gonna put that in there. Yes.
So in Baden Baden, which is down south in.
Oh my gosh, why am I blanking on what? It's called Bavaria and it's like dense forest. That's where the black forest is. So it's like we did an excursion into the black forest.
[00:07:00] Speaker B: Is the black forest also supposed to be like Hansul and Gretel territory is that?
[00:07:05] Speaker A: Yes, it's where a lot of the.
[00:07:09] Speaker B: Where are they buried?
[00:07:10] Speaker A: Yeah, exactly where they're buried?
[00:07:12] Speaker B: And the wedge, yeah. And the witch now is the candy house still standing.
[00:07:16] Speaker A: It is. You can see it.
[00:07:17] Speaker B: Okay, Probably not any good to eat.
[00:07:19] Speaker A: Anymore, right and right. And little Red Riding Hood. Well, and the wolf and the wolf. Little Red Riding Hood is funny because they don't call her little Red Riding Hood in Germany. And some people are very perplexed if you say little Red Riding Hood. They don't know what you're talking about.
It's a little red cap.
Okay, Yeah, because she had a little.
[00:07:40] Speaker B: Red cap, but not a cape.
[00:07:43] Speaker A: Some of them she had a cape, but it was the cap that was. That was relevant.
[00:07:47] Speaker B: Is she drawn differently over there? Is it a cap and not a hood sometimes.
[00:07:51] Speaker A: Yeah. And yeah, little red cap and the translation just like was funny over here.
[00:07:59] Speaker B: But anyway, also her, her grandma must have been kind of like a not great looking woman. If the wolf is passing for I know aged a little rough. If you're mistaken your grandma for a.
[00:08:13] Speaker A: Wolf or she was really stupid or both.
[00:08:16] Speaker B: Yeah, that's true. Yeah, maybe, maybe red cap was just not the sharpest. I'm gonna die not the sharpest cap in the closet, right?
[00:08:25] Speaker A: Yeah, maybe not.
Yep. But we went an excursion into the Black Forest and shortly into it it's pretty close into Baden Baden. There's Lake Mummelsea, which is where the mermaids are said to come from, so that's like one of their legends there and there was a story about a mermaid who fell in love with a man. And in their folklore mermaids could come out of the water and they would grow legs in the day. But they had to be back by midnight. Got it and they would. They would like turn back into murder people.
And this girl went out and I guess was convinced not to go back in because of her love.
And so they got cursed.
Good story, good story. So you know, it's just this tragic tale of mermaids and they have a statue of a mermaid in there, so it's like an iconic thing. And so we went to go look for some mermaids in the lake to find. I found a statue of a mermaid.
[00:09:22] Speaker B: Not quite the same thing.
[00:09:25] Speaker A: But that was pretty cool. Getting to hunt for mermaids where the mermaids supposedly came from in Germany. There's some real fun tales out that way, but we got to experience a lot of them going down from the brothers Grimm, from where they were born. And seeing we got to see the house they lived in as children.
And then up through kind of where some of their stories were inspired by who's this? We me and myself, me and my guides.
[00:09:56] Speaker B: Whoa and your new knight and shining armor.
[00:09:59] Speaker A: He was old though, I know you told me that.
[00:10:02] Speaker B: And I was like who is this guy? And then he sent a picture and I was like all right.
[00:10:05] Speaker A: Yes, he is.
[00:10:06] Speaker B: He's like my grandma.
[00:10:08] Speaker A: He could be like my Sir Barristan Selmy, I know.
[00:10:12] Speaker B: But you kind of have a crush on Baroness and sell me.
[00:10:14] Speaker A: I don't have a crush on Sir Barristan Selmy. I respect him.
He's the best fighter in the realm. He protects you, you know?
[00:10:21] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, sugar Daddy maybe. Hopefully he's not too wealthy.
[00:10:26] Speaker A: No, no, but it was pretty spectacular and I had a great time. I'm sorry that you got left.
[00:10:36] Speaker B: Wow, you didn't seem that sorry about it.
[00:10:39] Speaker A: I was I was but speaking of the night he took us around Trendelberg. It's a very small area and they have these lights that it's like street lights that have shadow work in them that each represent one of the fairy tales. And there are so many brothers Grimm fairy tales that never made. It here. There were so many that they were talking about that I'm like I've never heard of this before. So it was cool to hear some of the stories that were really big there, that just we've never heard.
And he took us around and told us the legends of the land of Trendelberg. And it was extra cool because he did it in German, because he said the language is just the story, the impact is the German.
And so I had one of the girls from the hotel with me translating. So he was telling the story in German and she was translating it.
Yeah, it was cool. We got to go into the church in the middle of the town, which had like a.
[00:11:56] Speaker C: Man traf sich hier in der Gemeinschaft mit den drei Riesinnen, die hier das Sagen hatten.
The Drendola, Saba, Rama, three giant.
[00:15:13] Speaker D: That's from the people who live here and in the area and everywhere just details that they told each other or wrote down.
So they accumulated these stories and put them into population.
[00:15:32] Speaker C: The castle of Drandelburg and the name of the city the same.
And in all this time all complete is Castle of Trendelmo up this hill, little boundaries go around to this place.
This is a special place for the giants and the next for the Knights virgin. Märchenstraße kam auf, ist geboren worden in Moskau.
Ein hessischer Wirtschaftsminister war vor über 50 Jahren in Moskau, hat abends beim Bankett eine Eisrevue, einen Tanz, Revue erleben und dieser Eisrevue zeigte im Tanz die deutschen Märchen.
Er kam zurück und ich in Moskau sehe die deutsche Märchen und bei uns hier in Hanau, Steinau, Kassel, da kommt das alles zusammen. Da muss was raus gemacht werden.
[00:17:18] Speaker D: We have to do something about this.
[00:17:21] Speaker C: Es gehört zu uns und da muss ich es sehen.
Touristik gesagt. Gut, dann machen wir da, wo die Brüder Grimm waren, eine Route.
[00:17:35] Speaker D: We have to do something and the tourists, the touristy people said that. Okay, then we're gonna do this where the brothers Grim were. This is Hessen, where we are right now. So they said that this area is too small.
So we have to go through all of Germany and all of the German fairy tales. Even though the brothers were more like eastbound.
[00:17:54] Speaker C: No, in Hanau.
[00:17:57] Speaker D: They were born in Hanau, which is part of Hessen. They lived in Kassel, part of Hessen. But they decided it's well. It's a natural treasure more or less all of Germany.
[00:18:07] Speaker C: Okay, the next station go to Göttingen and go to Berlin. Our Berlin by East Europe.
Soviet alternative. We go River Basel, you have Baron Münchhausen, you have the piper from Hamelin and have the animals from the crimson.
[00:18:30] Speaker A: Yes, I've been donkey dog.
[00:18:33] Speaker C: The cat can see the cat, yes, and the little mouse, yes.
In the city of Trennelburg is a lot of pictures, monuments go.
War es Absicht oder nicht zufällig oder nicht?
[00:18:54] Speaker D: Was it on purpose or was it happy accident?
[00:18:58] Speaker C: Aber ich habe das alles vereinnahmt in die große Runde der Geschichten.
[00:19:02] Speaker D: Picked up all of these statues and made it part of the story.
[00:21:19] Speaker D: For your spouse. And if someone says uses this too often, it's going to be a bit dangerous because I like you enough to eat you.
It's a very nice thing to say actually, but in this combination sounds a bit dangerous.
[00:21:36] Speaker A: There's a thematic cat right there.
[00:21:40] Speaker C: Wenn ich abends unterwegs bin, die Laternen, kommt er immer mit oh, he's always.
[00:21:45] Speaker D: Walking along when he's doing the lantern route.
Alles lief harmonisch weiter.
[00:26:14] Speaker D: Whoever comes by gets the hear from her. Come take my hand, help me out of here and I give you the castle.
[00:26:22] Speaker C: Aber diese Woche müssen wir nicht warten, die war vor der Woche erst da.
[00:26:25] Speaker D: So that happened last week, so we don't have to wait.
[00:26:33] Speaker C: The castle of Drenburg thousand years old, the church six hundred years and the town hall five hundred years.
I am seven hundred years.
[00:26:50] Speaker A: Well, that was cool and a very, very small and interesting part of what you'll see in our Germany episode of Weird World Adventures Season two, where we follow the trail of the Brothers Grimm and the fairy tale route.
[00:27:04] Speaker B: I'm looking forward to it. Yeah, cause I didn't see it yet. I'm gonna see it brand new too.
[00:27:10] Speaker A: It's going to be awesome And the rest of the episode is just as interesting, but kind of more focused on the Brothers Grimm and some of the other myths and legends I found around Germany. Pretty good, pretty good.
Thank you guys so much for tuning in today. Make sure to check out. Maloriesadventures.dot.com for more fun. Articles and stories and pieces of weird history and lore and follow us. Lariesadventures on Instagram allerymackie on TikTok.
[00:27:40] Speaker B: Sounds good. Any particular articles or topics of interest do you have planned coming up? Other than the show.
[00:27:48] Speaker A: Oh my goodness, there's so many. You had a couple good ideas.
[00:27:51] Speaker B: Yeah, I want to do like a history of board game, you know, gaming throughout history and we should tell people.
[00:28:00] Speaker A: How old backgammon is.
[00:28:01] Speaker B: I know, I just found that out today crazy like five thousand years old. It wasn't called backgammon, right? It has a bunch of names, but yeah, it was the same game, right?
[00:28:10] Speaker A: That's pretty cool. That's so cool. But yeah, we have, we have a bunch of interesting stuff coming out every day. I'm just I'm blanking on. It's also fascinating Yeah, and we did. We did our piece on We have to do a follow-up at some point. On Masquerade, because we did promise a follow up too.
[00:28:26] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:28:27] Speaker A: We did. So you guys will have to check out mallorysadventures.dot.com Before we have.
[00:28:33] Speaker B: Our great excuse to wear cape. Yeah, I've always wanted an excuse to unironically wear a cape in public and I was great. Finally got it.
[00:28:43] Speaker A: It was great and that circus and.
[00:28:45] Speaker B: I was complimented on my cape. Yeah, more than once.
[00:28:48] Speaker A: Yeah, the circus performer said like he must have lots of money. Look at His Nice Cape Packet Twenty.
[00:28:53] Speaker B: Bucks on Amazon Rolling. In the dough.
[00:29:00] Speaker A: But it was very cool. So we'll have to do a recap on that soon.
In the meantime, it's on mallorysadventures Dot Com Comma I write up about it. So all you Phantom fans out there make sure you go to maloriesadventures Dot Com and search for Masquerade. But do know I did a good job. Not including spoilers so much in the beginning, but you're gonna learn a little bit about it. But then there is a section with spoilers at the bottom. So don't read down there if you don't want.
[00:29:26] Speaker B: The spoilers are the spoilers for Masquerade the show, specifically Masquerade the show.
The book's been out for a while.
[00:29:34] Speaker A: The book has been out for a long time and I mean the musical. It's not I mean it's for Masquerade the show.
The things that I would want to know that I was trying to find before I went, that are not available such as what songs were cut.
[00:29:48] Speaker B: Got it.
[00:29:48] Speaker A: OK, if anything was added, you know if the order was the same. I like that kind of stuff.
[00:29:54] Speaker B: Some inside baseball, Yes, some Masquerade Phantom stuff.
[00:29:59] Speaker A: But that's the kind of thing that I search for before I go to something like. Which songs are still included? What was cut? Got it and did the order change?
Yeah, that kind of stuff. So it'll be major spoilers for the people that know the show well, that want to go.
[00:30:15] Speaker B: Got it Be aware.
[00:30:17] Speaker A: Be aware.
[00:30:18] Speaker B: Yep, okay, sounds good.
[00:30:20] Speaker A: Yeah, thank you so much for tuning in today. Everybody.
I'm your host Mallory and I'm your host Michael. And until next time everybody stay weird.
It's only in this regio the stone is the name Weser Berglandstein.
And church this at the castle. And as you can see, it's the oldest building in tunnel.
